Naturopathy (or Natural Medicine) is a holistic healthcare system that recognises the ability of all living organisms to heal and maintain themselves. The body is programmed to fight for survival, and whether in health or illness, it will strive for an equilibrium which would allow it to function. We all have observed that cuts and grazes heal, bruises dissolve, broken bones knit together again and a cold will run its course leaving our immune system stronger in the end. Sometimes the body needs assistance in healing itself when the illness is more serious. Natural Medicine can be the first port of call as it is gentle, works with the body without over-riding its physiological processes, and instead of side effects has many side benefits. It also has to take into consideration the intricate inter-relationships of various organ systems in the body and how they affect each other. A disruption in one area - whether structural, biochemical or mental/emotional – will inevitably lead to a dysfunction in another area of health.
As a Naturopath I will investigate the presenting symptoms of an ailment in order to identify the underlying causes of health imbalance and help to promote the innate self-healing mechanisms within the individual. Each person is genetically, structurally, biochemically, metabolically and emotionally unique and will respond differently to the same pharmaceutical medication or natural remedy, stress, physical strain, social and cultural influences.
Natural remedies such as foods, exercise, massage, sunshine, fresh air, water, heat, medicinal herbs and their extracts, minerals and vitamins are used to bring the body back into balance and enable it to recover.
Nutritional Therapy is the practical application of nutrition science promoting good health of an individual. It is recognised as a complementary medicine discipline and is relevant for individuals with chronic conditions, as well as those looking to lose weight or enhance their wellbeing.
As a Nutritional Therapist I will develop a personalised nutrition and lifestyle programme for each client, which takes into account their medical history, dietary preferences and lifestyle patterns. I will assess the whole health status of the individual and work with the client to achieve and maintain health through the diet best suited to them. Nutritional Therapists often work with clients who have chronic health problems that conventional medicine sometimes finds difficult to treat. These include allergies, digestive and bowel disorders, hormonal imbalances, fatigue, depression or stress, auto-immune conditions, migraines and skin disorders. Nutritional Therapy does not replace medical advice and I endeavour to work in co-operation with my clients’ GPs and consultants.
Making healthy food choices is more than eating your ‘five a day.’ It is about learning what foods are right for you so that your body can function at its best.
Herbal Medicine (or Phytotherapy) is the oldest, most universal and still very widely used system of medicine which utilises medicinal plants and herbs to prevent and treat ill health.
Herbal medicines have been in use longer than any scientific trial or study; the number of people involved bigger than any group selected for a trial. It has proved its effectiveness over thousands of years. Contemporary Herbal Medicine is based on a combination of traditional knowledge, clinical experience and scientific evidence. Herbal tinctures, decoctions and powdered herbs are used in a different way to medications. Drugs often originate from a plant source but they represent isolated active constituents, while Herbal Medicine uses the whole plant, which mitigates against many side effects. Herbal formulations can be altered and adjusted in accordance with the client’s symptoms and changed needs, they reflect the dynamics of the treatment process.
I have been fortunate enough to be trained in three systems of Herbal Medicine. My patients can benefit from evidence based Western Herbalism and ancient traditions of India and China, which offer unique energetic approaches to health.
